In this course, Hands in the Hive, we will cover in depth the following areas:
Howard_McGinnis

  • hive equipment,
  • beekeeper’s tools,
  • beekeeper safety,
  • hive handling,
  • honey,
  • extraction & bottling, and
  • pest management.

The practicum of this course will involve more direct work with active hives. If our bees have adequate stores in the hive, we will also demonstrate and/or practice the extraction of honey from a full frame of honeycomb.

The goal of this course is to have every participant get their hands in the hive, to gain familiarity and comfort with the process. Bees are quite gentle creatures if respected and handled carefully.

NOTE: Beekeeping 101 (BK101) is NOT prerequisite for this workshop. While the two are complementary, each can be taken independently of the other.  Also note that the morning and afternoon classes will not be identical and both can be taken for more experience and knowledge.  A discount will be offered for participants taking both sections.
